How are amputations performed?

The surgeon will leave behind as much healthy tissue as possible, and the bone will be smoothed out to make it easier to fit a prosthetic limb.
How is a prosthetic limb fitted?
Prior to surgery, a prosthetist and your surgeon will measure you for a prosthetic limb and consult together to ensure the operation is performed. Every artificial limb is fitted to the individual patient and built to their specific requirements. After the surgeon has amputated the limb and the swelling has reduced, a plaster mould of the residual limb is taken which serves as the template for creating the protheses.
Following the fitting of the protheses, extensive rehabilitation is required, teaching you how to put on and remove your artificial limb and how to make the most of its functionality. You will also learn how to care for your prosthetic limb and stump.
