Broken bones can often be fixed using a cast or plate to hold the bone in place. However, more complex fractures may require the insertion and subsequent removal of metal rods or plates to ensure the fracture heals correctly.

Why does metal work need to be used to fix some broken bones?
Human bone is a living tissue; therefore, if it breaks it will heal itself. New bone will grow between the break, fusing the bone back together. However, the bones need to be held in place, so they heal in the right position. This can be done with a cast, but sometimes surgery and metal work will be needed.
For example, if you suffer a tibia or fibula fracture (or both) following a motorbike accident, a surgeon may need to place special screws, plates, rods, wires, or nails inside the bones to fix them in the correct place. This prevents the bones from healing abnormally.
Once the fracture is healed, does the metalwork need to be removed?
Removing metal work used to stabilise bones in a complex fracture is becoming less common as the nerves can be damaged during the process. However, if the metal work is causing you discomfort or has become loose, doctors may remove it. In children and teenagers, metal work is usually removed.
